Foundation’s Edge

Foundation - Volume 4

I’ve always enjoyed Asimov’s work as a ‘light read’, so I picked up Foundation’s Edge when I was last getting more books.
Maybe its me, or maybe its the reading level, but I’m not finding Asimov’s works are aging well. I had problem’s with his habit of describing female character’s bodies in detail as to their sexual attractiveness, while describing males only where they don’t meet western norms, for example, some males wearing makeup.
Perhaps I am reading too much into it, and this is normal considering that the author was a hetero male, but it is irritating. Take the character of Bliss – when first introduced, she is described as “Small breasted and narrow waisted, with hips rounded and full. her thighs, which were seen in generous, but her legs narrowed to graceful ankles. Her hair was dark and shoulder-length, her eyes brown and large, her lips full and slightly asymmetric.“. I just cringe when I read that sort of sentence. I mean – really! Why on earth would we need that level of detail on a character who is greeting our heroes on their spaceship from a space station when they approach a new planet.? In his defense, the characters were pondering whether the inhabitants of the planet would be human, but it still feels over the top. Its so related to how fuckable she is, and not related to ‘we’re meeting people from another planet – are they going to kill us?” Annoying.
But, more generally, and less about very small parts of the book…
Asimov always writes a good story. This novel continues the Foundation series, after the initial 3 many years earlier. It is a worthy continuation of the story line.
I really must get my hands on the original trilogy – I don’t have a large amount of Asimov on my shelves. I should fix that.
