Cast a Bright Shadow

Lionwolf Trilogy - Book One

Tanith Lee has an odd writing style which doesn’t work for me very well.
The people don’t seem to be fleshed out – its sort of like reading about a bunch of robots in a really rich tapestry.
I sort of liked this book, but not very much.
I won’t give a plot summary, as it would be [...]

Mysterious Affair at Styles

Hercules Poirot

A classic Agatha Christie novel, and probably one of the older ones, from the feel of the writing.
I always enjoy a Hercules Poirot novel.
This one is from the ‘murder mystery in a genteel country home’ set.
Our narrator is a friend of the family, who is staying for a few months (no, really!) and shock, horror, [...]

The Doubled Edge - Book 3

This is the 3rd book in Lackey’s prequel series about elves – I haven’t read the ‘later’ series, but I am confused why I don’t have reviews of Books 1 and 2 here – I have certainly read them! Perhaps it was just before I started this site a year ago? Doesn’t seem that long [...]

Quicksilver

The Baroque Cycle - Book 1

Neal Stephenson’s work are always intricate works, and this is no exception.
I read it on my ipod touch, as I had given an ebook copy of The Baroque Cycle to my husband several years ago, but never had means to read it myself. On the ipod it comes out to over 3000 pages, although a [...]

Destroyer of Worlds

Known Space

A new Niven! Cool! A new Known Space book! Even better!
Mind you, once I got it home I flipped it open and noticed 2 other books with similar names on the fly leaf Nooooo!!! I haven’t managed to pick up volume 3 *again* have I?!?! But, no. It seems to be a prequel to the [...]

Cat Among the Pigeons

Hercules Poirot

A murder mystery set in a girls school – I didn’t even realise it was a Hercules Poirot story as he doesn’t appear until the very end of the book, and it wasn’t on the cover!
This is a good work, although a little dated.

Pawn of Prophecy

The Belgariad - Book One

Usual disclaimer: I wouldn’t normally include kid’s books in a ‘what I am reading list’, but I am reading these aloud to my son – if it takes me more than 2 nights to read through out loud, its enough book to include here.
We’ve been delayed in reading this as I had to convince him [...]

Northanger Abbey

My daughter gave me a copy of this classic for christmas, so of course I had to read it… Its an enjoyable read, and I always like sitting down with Catherine, and seeing how her happiness comes around.
A worthwhile read.

Conspirator

Foreigner - Number 10

I absolutely adore C J Cherryh’s writing and the Foreigner series is her best work, in my opinion, so I was very excited when the new book was published and have been waiting for an opportunity to get a copy.
It was worth the wait.
Bren is back on the planet after a successful mission, introducing not [...]

Northhanger Abbey

My daughter gave me a copy for Christmas, as we were missing it from the shelves. Love that girl so much! …
Northhanger Abbey is, of course, classic Jane Austen.
It is apparently, the first book she completed, but for unknown reasons the publisher who purchased it allowed it to languish – eventually she bought it back.
Its [...]
